Most Families Know They Need a Plan. Starting Is the Hard Part.

Finding an estate planning attorney in Washington, DC who listens before recommending is harder than it should be. Most firms lead with a document menu. You walk in, they ask a few basic questions, and before you've finished explaining your family, they're describing package options.

We work differently. We start with a free 15-minute discovery call to understand what's prompting you to plan right now. From there, we move into a Life & Legacy Planning Session — a deeper conversation that examines your family dynamics, your goals, your assets, and the things no intake form captures. Only after that conversation do we recommend a plan.

If you've been putting this off because you're not sure what you actually need, that's the right reason to call us first.

One Firm. Three Practice Areas. A Coordinated Plan.

Your estate plan doesn't exist in isolation. The documents in your will connect to elder law decisions. Your Medicaid exposure connects to your trust structure. Your family's probate risk connects to both. We handle estate planning, elder law, and probate as an integrated practice so nothing is built in a vacuum.

Estate Planning

Comprehensive, relational plans in three tiers — will-based, trust-based, or a proactive Medicaid and long-term care planning package. Every plan begins with a Life & Legacy Planning Session and includes a Legacy Interview that captures your stories, your values, and your family history alongside your legal documents.

Elder Law

If you have an aging parent, a recent diagnosis, or a long-term care situation that just got urgent, we help DC families plan ahead for Medicaid eligibility and long-term care costs before a crisis narrows the options.

Probate

When a loved one passes, their estate has to move through DC Superior Court. We guide the person responsible for settling the estate through every step of probate administration — with clarity, patience, and genuine attention to what families are going through.

Questions DC Families Ask Before They Call

  • What makes Kith + Kin Law different from other estate planning law firms in DC?

We start with your family, not a document menu. Our Life & Legacy Planning Session examines your family dynamics, goals, and assets before we recommend anything. Every plan also includes a Legacy Interview — a structured process for capturing stories and values alongside your legal documents — and we initiate a complimentary three-year plan review so your plan stays current without you having to chase us down.

  • Do I need an estate plan if I don't have significant assets?

Yes — and guardianship is the most urgent reason. If you have minor children and you pass without a guardianship designation, a court decides who raises them. That decision belongs to you, not a judge. Estate planning starts with your family, not your account balances.

  • What is a Life & Legacy Planning Session?

It's the foundation of our planning process. Before any documents are drafted, we sit down together and examine your family structure, your goals, your finances, and the values and stories you want to pass on. Only after that session do we recommend a plan. You can read the full process on our process page.

  • What neighborhoods in Washington, DC does Kith + Kin Law serve?

We serve clients throughout Washington, DC, with a particular focus on Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Columbia Heights. Our office is at 853 New Jersey Avenue SE, Suite 200, near Capitol Hill. We also accept Maryland clients on a case-by-case basis.

  • Do you offer estate planning services in languages other than English?

Yes. We provide estate planning services in French and Haitian Creole through our associate attorney. We are committed to making comprehensive estate planning accessible to DC's multilingual families.

  • How do I get started with Kith + Kin Law?

Schedule a free 15-minute discovery call. We'll talk about what's prompting you to plan, answer your initial questions, and determine whether we're the right fit for each other. It's a conversation, not a commitment.
